All Rise...

Judge David Johnson pillaged his neighbor's house. It was fun...until he was attacked by a Doberman.

The Charge

Three specials featuring an in-depth view of the infamous Norsemen.

The Case

In honor of their first big-time original series Vikings, History had released this collection of documentary specials on…what else, Vikings. The series they're hyping is pretty cool. These loosely related specials? Meh, so-so, bailed out by one of the corniest, most inadvertently hilarious documentaries I've ever seen.

Warriors: Viking Terror and Lost Worlds: The Vikings
These two installments of ongoing series are of the similar ilk, hosted by Green Beret Terry Schappert, an energetic block of granite who obviously enjoys talking turkey about the Vikes. He unloads facts, utilizes nifty computer graphics to show facts and figures, swings a sword, hoists a shield, and even sails on a model Viking boat. Lots of info delivered with the subdued enthusiasm of a Daisy Cutter.

Foot Soldiers: The Vikings
And here we go: the most memorable aspect of this release. This 1998 production Foot Soldiers is completely embarrassing. Richard Karn hosts and his duties involve sitting on a motorcycle or standing on a surfboard in front of a blue screen as a Viking ship cruises behind him. Buttressing this tomfoolery is footage from old Viking movies and some of the worst dramatic re-enactments you will ever see. If you're able to glean any historical trivia from this crap, you, my friend, are indeed a bigger Norse-head than I.

That's all. Three episodic features, clocking in just north of two hours, all in standard def 1.33:1 full frame, with Dolby 2.0 Stereo, English closed captioning subtitles, and no extras.

The Verdict

Watch that other Vikings show instead. It's good!
