Judge Daryl Loomis turned down a sweet deal to join NKOTB. He just can't work with a bad boy like Donnie.

Life is good for cabaret star Delores Rossi (Cia Löwgren, Every Afternoon). Young, beautiful, and wildly talented, she's also the most desired singer in the world. Two top record executives desperately want to sign her to a recording contract and she wants to play each against the other to get the best deal for herself. What's a sexy Danish girl to do?
You've got to hand it to the Scandinavians. Maybe it's the cold weather that gets the thought of body heat in their minds, but they sure know how to put together erotica. Though I haven't seen too much from Finland, the Swedes, the Danes, and the Norwegians can all do great work making a raucous, bawdy comedy. In the Sign of the Gemini, directed by Danish filmmaker Werner Hedman (Agent 69 in the Sign of the Scorpio) is no exception and, in fact, is at the very top of its class.
Erotic film doesn't strive for too much philosophical or literary greatness, so it's hard to call In the Sign of the Gemini intelligent, but Hedman keeps the story clear and his characters well-drawn without convoluting the plot. A simple story of one-upmanship, the two record execs (Ole Søltoft, A Man with a Maid, and Preben Mahrt, The Loves of Cynthia) top each other in their attempts to sign her, reaching more and more absurd heights as the film goes on. Delores, however, knows their tricks and, without falling for them, succumbs to their games knowing that she'll win, they'll both look foolish, and she's going to have a sexy good time in the process.
This good time involves a lot of singing and dancing, mostly sans panties, that is almost universally entertaining. As we meet our characters in the beginning, Delores is singing a version of Jacob Gade's famous Tango Jalousie at a party where everybody breaks into a dance that sets a tone for the entire film. Unlike a lot of erotic films that have smatterings of domination and sexual violence, In the Sign of the Gemini is pure bawdy fun without a hint of menace. Everyone is clearly having a blast in the making, though you can't say much for the performances. This doesn't matter a bit, however, because these actors have been hired less for their thespian skills than for their genetics…and what genes they have, at least on the XX-side of the chromosome.
Sometimes in erotic cinema, it seems that casting agents are forced to settle for less than attractive actresses to fill some pretty unseemly roles. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate realistic women in these films, but there's a difference between realistic and disturbing. This is no concern in this film, however. The women here are stunning, some of the most attractive I have seen in the genre. It starts with Cia Löwgren, who makes it clear from her first moment on screen why she is so desired. The lustful look in her eyes as she sings is priceless; I would certainly sign her to a deal. From top to bottom, beauties all, but it isn't just their physical gifts that make them this appealing. They throw themselves into their roles with a rare gusto, and it makes a difference. There is hardcore footage in this film, but not the close-up inserts fans have come to expect. No, these women talk a good game, but they can back it up just as well, making for erotic tryst after lustful romp and a thoroughly enjoyable entry in the erotic genre.
This release of comes out of MVD's Classic Danish Erotica series and, if this entry is representative of the entire collection, it is a series that will thoroughly satisfy fans. The image looks quite good for a film of its age and stature, realistic colors and few transfer errors, though there is noticeable grain in the picture. The mono sound is obviously not a dynamic mix, but it is good enough that tall the moans and groans come through crisp and clear. There are no extras outside of a short still gallery, but what is there to say, really?
Werner Hedman and company have constructed what could be the pinnacle of European erotic filmmaking. That statement may not say much, but fans could do a whole lot worse than In the Sign of the Gemini.
