All Rise...

Judge Lacey Worrell bobs her head in time to a disco beat as she reviews this disc.

The Charge

There's nothing ordinary about the characters Chris Kattan brought to Saturday Night Live.

The Case

Chris Kattan's frenetic characters may not be as well known as those of fellow SNL-ers Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, and Tracy Morgan, but it doesn't stop this DVD from being laugh-out-loud funny.

The DVD opens up with the requisite Butabi brothers sketch featuring Kattan and Will Ferrell bobbing their heads in unison in a New York club. This is certainly not the best Butabi brothers installment, but it is still worth a look. A Night at the Roxbury, the feature-length film based on these famous characters, is like Dumb and Dumber: It's one of those films viewers feel they should turn their noses up at, but they end up watching until the very end and hating themselves for finding it funny.

For further proof of Kattan's comedic abilities, witness the sketch where Kattan, as one of the New Jersey-born DeMarco brothers, sends guest stars Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora into gales of laughter as he imitates their classic acoustic performance of "Dead or Alive." As evidenced by this sketch, the best moments on SNL often occur when cast members can't keep a straight face.

Another classic is Kattan's visit to the Weekend Update set with Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug, to whom he bears a remarkable resemblance; anchor Norm MacDonald keeps a straight face but pauses frequently between questions in order to compose himself. It is also nice to see the inclusion of "Goth Talk," where Kattan plays a misfit who broadcasts a show from his parents' basement; this sketch never gained the popularity it rightfully deserved. Viewers will also enjoy the sketch where one of Kattan's most outlandish characters, Mango, attempts to upstage guest host Jennifer Lopez at the VH-1 Divas Live show.

The one sketch that doesn't quite fit is an overlong courtroom scene with celebrity guest John Goodman; it feels as though it rambles on forever, and it is curiously placed near the beginning of the disc. This is filler material at best.

This DVD's audio and picture quality are adequate; they are a slight improvement over what you might expect watching SNL on network television. Despite the fact that E! Entertainment Television has recently procured the rights to run classic episodes of SNL, this "Best of" series is a worthwhile investment for fans of Kattan or other individual cast members such as Phil Hartman, Will Ferrell, and Tracy Morgan. In any given episode of the television show, only about 20-30 minutes are really worth watching; these DVDs cull the most memorable characters into a reverent package. Don't be scared off by the relatively short 77-minute running time; even though the special features come across as an afterthought, the DVD itself is more than enough to allow one to appreciate the essence of Kattan's work.
