All Rise...

Judge Alice Nelson has a nice new yellow kitchen sponge she just can't bring herself to use.

The Charge

Hey! Have a Krabby Patty.

The Case

My 8 year old loves SpongeBob. She has this little Keepsake box with his silly smiling face on front, where she keeps all her worldly treasures. Every week, when my movie arrives from Verdict, she invariably asks, "Momma, did you get a kids movie?" And when I say, "No, not this time sweetie," she walks away slowly, turns and says, "I hope you get one next time." So for you babe, this is "next time." Together we'll watch the world's most famous sponge and his dimwitted starfish friend on a few of their merry adventures in SpongeBob Squarepants: Ghouls Fools.

This compilation DVD contains seven ghostly-themed episodes from various seasons, with appearances by all of SpongeBob's Bikini Bottom friends, including Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy Cheeks. Each episode also has a special guest appearance by the beloved Flying Dutchman.

• "Ghoul Fools" (Season 8)
• "The Curse of Bikini Bottom" (Season 7)
• "Ghost Host" (Season 4)
• "Born Again Krabs" (Season 3)
• "Arrgh!" (Season 1)
• "Your Shoes Untied" (Season 2)
• "Money Talks" (Season 5)

SpongeBob has been a favorite of many since its 1999 debut. With more than 200 episodes in the can, the seven offered here aren't meant to be a retrospective of the series. What we get is a fun, albeit small taste of the strange little world of Bikini Bottom; an entertaining 88 minutes that is in no way a letdown. If you're not a regular viewer, you aren't missing any crucial plot points which will keep you from enjoying these out of sequence shows. You can step into any point in SpongeBob Squarepants 12 year run and feel right at home. If you have kids (and even if you don't), this is a nice little collection to own when you need a quick SpongeBob fix.

Presented in standard definition 1.33:1 full screen and Dolby 2.0 Stereo, the A/V fidelity is the same as what we've seen broadcast on Nickelodeon; not a bad way to watch SpongeBob and the boys. There are no extras.

On paper, a talking yellow kitchen sponge in brown shorts and black shoes doesn't sound like it would be a successful program. But in practice the show manages to be sweet and funny, when it could easily wallow in an endless stream of crude jokes emphasizing embarrassing bodily functions. SpongeBob is kind, even if he isn't too swift, and his demeanor appeals to kids both young and old.

The Verdict

A giggly "Not Guilty" from the 8 year old (and me too).
