All Rise...

Judge Brett Cullum has a new bromance. Hey there, Joe! Looking at you, buddy.

The Charge

"He's like an idealistic hippy stuck inside the body of a testosterone-pumped U.S. Marine."—The Guardian on Joe Rogan

The Case

Joe Rogan: Talking Monkeys in Space captures one of the world's most baffling standup comedians in his new environment. No longer the face of Fear Factor, Joe has become a color commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and an outspoken advocate for legalizing marijuana. You can look out at his audience and see a strange mix of women who came to lust after him, guys who want to hang out with him, and hippies who think he is on their side. It's all fight fans mixed with potheads, and the combination only makes sense in the vicinity of Mr. Rogan. Joe's a comedian who has accused other comedians of stealing jokes, and he basically does an act that is a stoned rant on how little sense the world makes. He throws his entire body into the show, and he spends the last half of the act answering audience questions. He's a nice guy, but never afraid to call out bullshit where he sees it. And so this disc makes for an interesting ride of cerebral comedy from a guy who could kick your ass six ways to Sunday, but somehow would rather just get high with you and talk about monkeys.

Comedy Central DVDs are usually just unedited versions of their comedy specials, and this one is no different. We get the show which was originally a cable special, but this time none of the language is bleeped for censors. Color is good, and dialogue is clear and easy to discern. It looks quite clear, and it seems the show was filmed from several good angles. Extras include more footage than what you saw on the cable channel as well as behind the scenes footage divided up into a couple of segments. We get to see Joe do a cardio workout, stretch, hang out with friends, and talk backstage. It's all pretty fun, but nothing super insightful.

Joe Rogan has an interesting act for a comedian who is mired in reality television and intense extreme sports. He's very passionate about his comedy, because it is made up of topics he enjoys talking about. Most people like Joe because they think they know him as the likable host of Fear Factor that he was, but there is so much more to him. He's cerebral and extremely talented at jumping up and down while raving about what bothers him in the world. Talking Monkeys in Space shows us a nutty art form where Joe thinks for you…AHHHHHH! Now if I could just get him to work out for me.

The Verdict

Guilty of making me want to start a bromance with Joe Rogan.
