All Rise...

Judge Steve Power once made a movie with a ten dollar budget. It sucked...

The Charge

Looking for Trouble? He's Looking for you…

The Case

Luke and his pretty bride-to-be are out enjoying a romantic evening for two when a group of streetwise punks-slash-drug addicts take it upon themselves to beat the tar out of the happy couple. Luke recovers, but in a startling turn of events, his pretty gal does not. Full of grit and determination, Luke, a successful business kind of guy pumps his personal fortune into a gimp mask and some kickboxing lessons. With his fast car and newfound butt-kicking prowess, Luke becomes a Vigilante!

Every so often, an ultra low budget flick comes out of nowhere and manages to draw a crowd on the pure charm or ingenious creativity of those responsible. Vigilante is no such flick. Its low budget roots are obvious from the start, and there's no trace of charm or ingenuity to be had. I'd criticise the script if I thought there was one. We all know how the story goes, nasty attack scene followed by hero beating the pulp out of bad guys who are too scared to do anything other than stand there and get punched. Sure there's something about corrupt cops and the Australian Cosa Nostra or something, but it doesn't make any sense, and thinking about it for too long will only cause lesions in your mind. This is a stupid movie than leans heavily on the technically solid MMA-style fighting, while forsaking things like post production, screenplays, or a plot that makes any kind of relevant sense whatsoever.

The screener from MTI doesn't fare particularly well either. The video is a murky pool of digital artifacts and noise that looks as though it may have come from a Sony Handicam. There doesn't seem to be any sweetening of the audio whatsoever, and extras are nonexistent outside of a terrible trailer. This disc is even more of a mess than the movie's narrative.

The Verdict

While there's definitely a sign that the production team did a little bit of homework before they started shooting, the end result doesn't amount to much. Guilty.
