All Rise...

Judge Brett Cullum never trusts anyone who tells him to breathe while getting into downward facing dog.

The Charge

Yoga works…for everybody!

The Case

Yoga is everywhere these days. Within a three mile radius of my house in Houston, TX I have four gyms that offer classes, three yoga studios, a hot yoga practice offered in a strip mall, and even a space that offers a clothing optional version for the uninhibited. There is certainly no shortage of places to go and twist myself into a pretzel in a room full of strangers, most of which are super crowded. If I wanted to, I could take a class every hour of the day from 5:00a until 10:00p without ever leaving my part of town. I'm really not sure why I'm sitting here alone with a yoga DVD, other than the fact that it's less embarrassing when I mess up my downward facing dog pose alone in my own house. As an added bonus, I don't have to shower or find my super cute yoga pants. YogaWorks is an organization founded by three teachers who have formed a chain of locations with multiple studios in California and New York City.

Everything takes place on a set that looks like a yoga studio, done in soft woods and greens. Everybody is dressed in cute yoga outfits, and all are barefoot with their own mats. There are three classes featured on YogaWorks for Everybody: Beginners AM/PM. Perky Patty leads the 40 minute beginner class that is the main feature. Billy takes you through the 10 minute AM "wake-up" class. Most of the poses are easy, until he decides to drag his foot up to his inner thigh and raise his hands. Other than that precarious position, this one is basic enough for a beginner. Perky Patty returns to help you relax during the PM yoga session which is also only 10 minutes. She spends the first two minutes in child's pose, meaning she's wanting you in a ball on the floor trying to relax after a hard day. As an extra feature, Perky Patty will take you through each pose slowly in the learner's guide section, which features her alone in the studio explaining each position.

This DVD is a nice simple routine for beginners, and certainly has room to grow as you become more advanced. Some of the poses are going to be a challenge, but the pace is nice and slow. I'd recommend this, even though there are no celebrities and this is just simple non-flashy, yoga. Perhaps that's the reason it works so well, because YogaWorks for Everybody: Beginners AM/PM doesn't give into the hype surrounding yoga right now. It's simple and earnest about the practice, and all you need is a yoga mat and a little bit of space.

The Verdict

YogaWorks for Everybody: Beginners AM/PM is not guilty of anything other than making me less social in my yoga practice.
