Learn to count from 1 to 10!

The Case

It's crazy how much number counting videos have changed. In my day, it was watching the Mad Painter (Paul Benedict, who passed away in late 2008) paint the numbers 2 through 11 on Sesame Street with Stockard Channing.

This tutorial is pretty easy to describe. Utilizing gorgeous images and striking photographs, the program helps children count from 1 to 10. A young narrator introduces the number and then uses objects to count. For example, when you reach a number, the narrator counts that many jellyfish or buses. The narrator then uses the object in a sentence such as "These ships float in the water."

Accompanying the images is music from classic composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Brahms, Chopin and my personal favorite Pachelbel. I'm not sure if this was an ideal decision, considering most kids would fall asleep listening to these pieces. Most kids today seem to be addicted to Hannah Montana or the Jonas Brothers, though they are no doubt too busy to do educational DVDs like this one.

Running approximately 54 minutes, the program also has a repeat play option. The bonus features include activities such as putting puzzle pieces together (4:24), connecting dots (3:37), and guessing animals (7:25). The latter extra basically gives clues to an animal before fully revealing a photograph of the animal.

Kindergarten teachers and parents should find this DVD useful. As for me, I'll stick with the Mad Painter episodes.
