Lebanon, Tennessee: The Director's Cut of the Nashville Line

Lebanon, Tennessee, off the tourist reel: NASCAR's June triple-header, rare cedar glades, a 1949 movie palace and four 2-star bases to book.

Updated Oct 25, 2026
Nashville keeps the highlight reel - Broadway's neon, the Opry, a museum to the man in black. Roughly 50 km east, where Nashville's commuter rail runs out of track, Lebanon, Tennessee plays the director's cut: NASCAR's June triple-header at Nashville Superspeedway, a restored movie palace still showing on the square, the globally rare cedar glades of a state park, and the small-town debut of a highway giant called Cracker Barrel. This is the bonus-footage guide to the town the trailer skips - the timings that matter, and the four 2-star bases worth pausing in along the way.

Where the Nashville Line Ends

Every railway has a last stop worth stepping off at, and Nashville's eastern commuter line - the WeGo Star, once billed as the Music City Star, about 51 km of track from Riverfront Station - ends at Lebanon Station on West Baddour Parkway. I spent a career working long-haul trains out of Chicago, and the question passengers always asked me down the carriage was where a route was worth breaking; the towns where a commuter spur simply stops are the underrated ones. Ask the station desk which runs operate that day and when the last train returns - the Star runs weekday mornings and afternoons only, with no holiday service, so check the day's running before planning around it.

The June Triple-Header at the Superspeedway

One weekend each June the town becomes a paddock. Nashville Superspeedway, on F-McCrary Road at Lebanon's eastern edge, stacks three days across June 4-6, 2027: the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series opens Friday, the Sports Illustrated Resorts 250 for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series runs Saturday, and the Cracker Barrel 400 Cup race closes Sunday. Tickets are on sale now, capped at nine per order, with all-inclusive pricing; grandstand weekends are the ones to book rooms for early. The economy play below keeps the budget for the seats. For those festival nights - race weekend above all - this is the economy box seat, the motel equivalent of a clean, quick pit stop: air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms, free WiFi, a work desk, fridge and microwave, a 24-hour front desk for post-race hours, daily housekeeping, full-day security and free on-site parking. Guests single out the value for money and the calm of the area. Theme: race-week value. Facts: 43 km from Nashville International Airport; The Hermitage 35 km; Grand Ole Opry 43 km; non-smoking rooms; facilities for disabled guests (hotels in Lebanon, Tennessee).

Cracker Barrel's Original Cut

Before it was an interstate constant, Cracker Barrel was one store: Dan Evins opened the first Old Country Store in Lebanon in 1969, and the company still files its headquarters here on Hartmann Drive. That is the scavenger's prize - the original cut of a brand the whole highway knows, sitting quietly in a county seat. The tie turns literal on race Sunday, when the Cup race carries the hometown name as the Cracker Barrel 400. Any other weekend, pair the pilgrimage with the historic downtown driving tour and the square's independent shops.

Fiddlers Grove, the County in Miniature

At the James E. Ward Agricultural Center on East Baddour Parkway, Fiddlers Grove preserves Wilson County the way a director's cut preserves scenes: more than fifty rebuilt buildings - a one-room log cabin, a one-room school, a blacksmith's shop, a grist mill, a sheriff's office and jail, even Sam Houston's law office - plus telephone, electric and Century Farm museums. The grove fills each late summer for the Wilson County Fair - Tennessee State Fair, billed as the largest county fair in Tennessee; the rest of the year it keeps porch-rocking calm. Fair week is the calendar's other big draw after June's races - book rooms early.

The Cedar Glades in Spring

South of town, Cedars of Lebanon State Park guards the county's rarest footage: limestone glades where rock sits so close to the surface that 19 rare plants grow here and nowhere else on Earth. The park lies about 50 km east of Nashville, off Highway 231, with trails open year-round and an accessible paved loop by the nature centre; spring is the season, when endemic wildflowers blanket the glades. Hikers share the woods with fox, deer and turkey, and the longer circuits pass sinkholes and a centuries-old chinkapin oak. The base below was written for days like these.

On trail days my pick of the four is this one - the extended-stay cut with extra footage: indoor pool, fitness centre, shared lounge, terrace, concierge service, barbecue, and kitchens with fridge, dishwasher and microwave in certain rooms. Its guest sheet reads like it was written for the glades, listing hiking, fishing and cycling among the things to do in and around Lebanon. Theme: the director's-cut base. Facts: The Hermitage 32 km; Lane Motor Museum 39 km; Johnny Cash Museum 43 km; Nashville International Airport 33.7 km; business centre, laundry, 24-hour front desk, free WiFi, family rooms (extended-stay rooms).

Daylight Runs to the Hermitage and the Opry

Lebanon doubles as a staging town for Nashville's icons: The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's plantation home, sits about 34 km west, and the Grand Ole Opry 43 km - both daylight-run territory, with the Hermitage's grounds best given a slow half-day and the Opry best saved for an evening show. The pantry-equipped base below turns the run into cooler-and-thermos territory rather than a wallet-draining one.

For the daylight runs west, base camp is the all-suites curiosity: family rooms with fully equipped kitchens - tea and coffee maker, fridge, microwave - a minimarket for restocking the cooler, barbecue facilities, lounge, lift, business area and a 24-hour front desk. Guests rate it highest for room cleanliness, kitchen and restaurant, which on a kitchen-in-every-room property is the verdict that counts. Theme: the road-trip pantry. Facts: 43 km from Nashville International Airport; free on-site parking; non-smoking rooms; facilities for disabled guests; highly rated for cleanliness, kitchen and restaurant (its Booking.com listing).

After Dark on the Historic Square

Downtown's historic square, a National Register commercial district, carries the after-dark footage. The Capitol Theatre on West Main Street opened in 1949 as a technicolor movie house, kept its original porcelain marquee through two decades of vacancy, and reopened in 2012 with musicals, concerts, comedy and movie nights - an official Tennessee Music Pathway stop. The listings keep ticking between races: a Billy Bob Thornton rock date sits in the music column, and each December the Dancing Lights of Christmas take over the fairgrounds - the season's slow-speed answer to race weekend. For show nights, the sleep-only option below closes the ledger.
